Vitamin IV drip have gained attention over the past few years when celebrities such as Simon Cowell, Rihanna, Madonna, and Gwyneth Paltrow just to mention a few started getting the treatment. Despite its growing popularity, is there enough scientific basis to prove its efficacy? Is it just one of those health trends that will soon die out, or does it have the potential of becoming a mainstream therapy as part of your health and wellness regimen? Let’s find out. Dr. Mehmet Oz, a popular celebrity doctor, investigates about intravenous vitamin treatments on a 3-part video series. Do they really work at all? Is it safe? Is it for you? Sandy, who gets a monthly iv vitamin therapy, agreed to get her treatment right on the show. When asked by Dr. Oz why she gets these treatments, this is what she had to say: “Well Dr. Oz I work full time and I’m the kind of person that’s always on the go. So it’s really important especially if I feel a cold coming on or I have a stressful week, it’s really important. I know that this treatment is going to help me..it helped me feel better. It made me feel better. And now this IV cocktail that I get is my monthly routine.” When asked on how quickly it works once she gets her treatment: “For me, immediately. And it’s funny because I’ve actually able to accomplish my to-do list and I’ve never been able to do that before. I feel unstoppable. I feel revitalize, its great. And besides that people, say that I look younger and that is extremely important because I just had my 45th birthday.” You can watch the first video by clicking below: Part 2 – Watch Here Part 3 – Watch Here IV vitamin therapy have been around since the 1960’s. Dr. John Myers, a Boston MD physician, popularized the said treatment as part of his treatment regimen in providing relief for clients suffering from fibromyalgia or Epstein-Barr disease, chronic fatigue, asthma, seasonal allergic rhinitis and more. Studies and research including the one published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information website entitled “The Effect of Intravenous Vitamin C on Cancer- and Chemotherapy-Related Fatigue and Quality of Life” concluded that: “Due to the debilitating nature of cancer- and chemotherapy-related fatigue and other side-effects that impact on QOL, any therapy that can alleviate these symptoms will significantly improve the QOL of sufferers. A number of phase I clinical trials have shown that high-dose IV vitamin is safe and well tolerated in cancer patients, either as a monotherapy (8, 45) or in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents (28, 46). Although direct anti-cancer effects of IV vitamin C have not yet been confirmed by these small studies, there is consistent evidence that IV vitamin C can improve cancer patient’s QOL (6–9) and decrease multiple aspects of fatigue (22, 23)” You can read more about this study here. As with any other treatment, there are also risks involved in intravenous vitamin therapy. According to the British Nutrition Foundation, a registered charity which aims to educate and provide the public useful results of research on issues regarding diet and public health, has this to say: “Injecting anything into the bloodstream also comes with risks such as ‘air bubbles’ in the syringe that can transfer to the blood stream, allergic reactions and infection, which are more likely to occur if the person administering the injection is not properly qualified. At present, there are no regulatory processes governing safety in such clinics. Vitamins should only be administered via the veins by qualified health professionals, to people who are too ill to feed themselves or those that have been diagnosed by their GP or medical specialist as having severe (typically single nutrient) nutritional deficiencies.” With these facts laid out, IV vitamin therapy is surely here to stay. Whether it is for you or not, it is of utmost importance that you only get the treatment from expert providers such as board and IV certified Naturopathic practitioners.
